ALBERS: After 93 years of tending gardens and spreading smiles, Martin "Marty" passed away peacefully at the United Mennonite Home in Vineland Ontario on Saturday October 6, 2012. He has gone to join his beloved wife Frankie. Born on the farm near Lamerton, Alberta, Marty was the youngest of ten children. After years on the farm he joined the R.C.A.F. and served as an Air Bomber in the 427th Squadron during the Second World War. Following the war he went to agricultural college and met his future wife Frankie. He worked with the Veteran's Land Act in Alberta, then in 1966 moved from Edmonton to Chatham where he worked for the Farm Credit Corporation until his retirement in 1980. Marty had three passions outside of his family. The first was music: he played trumpet and other instruments in his early years and loved to listen to the classics or sing a beloved hymn in his deep bass voice. His second was his garden where he spent many happy hours coaxing the best out of his roses. His strongest passion was his faith. Marty derived much strength and peace from his beliefs; as long as he was able, he lived his faith through charitable gifts and participation in service organizations such as the Masons. Through to the end he was known for his gentlemanly manner and his ready smile. Surviving are his two children, David and his wife Kathryn of Ottawa, and Katherine Cooke and her husband Garry of Grimsby Ontario, as well as three grandchildren, Lauryn Albers, Samantha and Lyndsey Cooke. He is predeceased by his wife Frankie (2000) and his son Jack (1985). Friends will be received at the Bowman Funeral Home, 4 Victoria Avenue, Chatham (352-2390) on Thursday October 11 from 2:00-4:00 and 7:00-9:00 p.m. Members of the RCL Branch 28 will conduct a Memorial Service at the funeral home Thursday evening at 7:00pm . A funeral service will be conducted on Friday, October 12 at 1 p.m. with Rev. Dr. Marg Moriyama officiating. Interment in Maple Leaf Cemetery, Chatham, will follow. In lieu of flowers, contributions to any branch of the Cadets or the church of your choice would be appreciated.
